We are currently in the midst of Carnaval (which is the European name for Mardi Gras). It is a religious celebration leading up to Lent. It is a time that many indulge because Lent is about giving things up. Many of us don't know much about the holiday so here you go:
Carnaval, or Carnivale, is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
It is usually celebrated in Catholic regions of the world and since we live in Limburg the only Catholic state in the Netherlands (they don't celebrate it in Amsterdam) they celebrate it here.
Basically, it is 6 days of a BIG party! :)
To get into the Carnaval spirit and have fun looking at all the crazy costumes on the streets we went out for a yummy dinner in Maastricht with our friends, Jason & Jenny.
It's nice to dress up & enjoy some awesome company some yummy Italian Food!!!
